Adoption Application & FAQs
Thank you for considering a CLEAR animal
Q: What can I expect in terms of the adoption process?
A: Once you complete the adoption application on our website, our executive director will be in touch with you about when would be a good time to discuss your application. After a short interview, the executive director will let you know whether or not you qualify for adoption (most people do!) and what next steps may be. The executive director will email you an adoption contract and link to pay the adoption fee, please complete these steps before your adoption dat
Q: How long does the process take?
A: This varies- if you’re enthusiastic about adopting a particular critter, we will work with you to bring them home as soon as feasibly and logistically possible! If the animal is in foster, we will put you in touch with the foster parent, and you can decide upon timing that is mutually agreeable.
Q: Where do I pick up the animal?
A: From our location in Andersonville OR From an off-site foster home
Q: What is the adoption fee?
A: It depends on the animal...
-
Parakeets/finches/canaries: $130
-
Normal cockatiels and lovebirds: $200
-
Fancy cockatiels and Quakers: $300
-
Any other medium birds: $600
-
Larger birds (IE, an Amazon): $800
*Subject to change depending on bird’s health status
*Adoption fees discounted for grouped animals and repeat adopters
*Adoption fees are waived for active duty military, veterans, educators placing their pet(s) in a classroom environment, and animal care professionals
Q: Why do I have to pay an adoption fee?
A: CLEAR is a nonprofit organization, which means that 100% of our expenses are funded by donations and adoption fees. Your adoption fee is used to perpetuate our mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming exotics in need and educating the public about their unique needs. The adoption fee is generally linked to how much money we spend at the vet for a given animal. If they need to go to the vet more than once, we pay for that too.
Q: What is included when I adopt an animal?
A: Basically, we give you everything you need to succeed with your critter!
-
A species-appropriate starter enclosure
-
A travel carrier
-
Enclosure equipment (perches and toys for birds, heating elements and cage furniture for reptiles)
-
Food (if available)
-
Avian probiotics (if available)
Q: It’s adoption day! What should I expect?
A: Well, a few things...
-
A critter with a clean enclosure who is ready to go to their forever home!
-
Don’t forget to take adoption day pictures with your new pet!
-
Be prepared to make space in your home for the critter and their enclosure
-
Be prepared to accommodate a critter who may be stressed by the transition. An adoption is a big moment in animal (and human!) lives, so some stress/anxiety behaviors are expected.
Don’t forget- give yourself (and your critter!) space. Bonding with your animal will take time. Establishing an appropriate routine with your new pet early on will lead to successes down the road.
Don’t forget- once a CLEARie, always a CLEARie! We are here to help support you and your new pet through this new endeavor. Be sure to call/text/email us if you have any questions or concerns.
Don’t forget- set up a new client appointment with your critter at a licensed exotic animal veterinarian ASAP- nearly all of our critters go to the vet, but it’s important to establish a relationship for this animal with your own vet.
